The Oshawa Guide house was a gift from Colonel and Mrs. Robert Sam McLaughlin on November 6, 1948. Mrs. McLaughlin was extremely interested in the Girl Guides and was a member herself. She was instrumental in persuading her husband that the Girl Guides should have a building. Colonel McLaughlin at the time had just given the Boy Scout Movement in Oshawa, the property for Camp Samac.

The first meeting of council to be held in the new Guidehouse was on October 21, 1948.

Lady Baden Powell visited on May 27, 1952.

On June 5, 1963, Mrs. McLaughlin donated the money to add an extension onto the existing House.

The Oshawa Division Guide Store officially opened for business on September 15, 1974.

The House includes two gymnasiums, front room, kitchen, council room and Archives room. Central Area Office is located on the upper level. Oshawa Girl Guides and Guiders are proud to have such a facility available to use for council meetings, trainings, events, banquets and unit meetings. We are unique to the area in that we have a place to call our own. Often you'll hear a little Brownie say, "Brown Owl, do you live here?". Many of us would respond with a cheerful, "Yes!".

Inside you'll find Guiders looking for resources in the library, touring the archives room or shuffling thru the recycling depot to find that perfect craft item. The House is now available for sleepovers, and has been used by many a unit on weekends for a one night getaway. Downstairs, the store is very busy and always receiving new and interesting books, badges, crests, t-shirts, cards and gifts. In 1995 the store was renovated and now has a 'shop till you drop' atmosphere !!

The Oshawa Guide house stands as a symbol of Girl Guiding in Oshawa and is well known throughout the city.

In 2000, Guide House had a lovely mural painted on the South side of the building, sponsored by the Legion. Upon its' completion, a dedication was held, attended by members of Oshawa Division Guiding, the Legion, and the City. The Snowbirds flew over the House as part of the ceremony.
